Hiring a Locksmith to Help Protect Your Paperwork

Keeping a copy of all your important paperwork safe in one place is a great way to ensure that you have access to things like proofs of purchases, insurance policies, and even wills. But keeping paperwork in a desk drawer or under the bed is not the safest plan – what if a fire breaks out or someone infiltrates your home and steals all the important stuff? Consider hiring a locksmith to install a fireproof floor safe in a closet of your home or in the basement where all of your important paperwork and investments can be kept. You’ll have instant access to it all when you need it, and it will be safe from theft and destruction when you don’t. You might be surprised at how many ways a locksmith can help keep your property at home safe. Explore the pages here for more information!

Key Broken Off In The Lock: What Happens Next?

by Manuel Carmona

Why does a key break off in the lock? It's often due to the condition of the key itself. Age, general wear and tear, and the pressure exerted on the key when it's inserted into the lock and turned can all play a role. Of course, when your key breaks off in a lock, you're probably not so interested in why and are more likely to wonder what to do next.

Extraction of the Broken Key

The first priority is getting you back into your home. Even if you have access to a spare key, it's of no use until the broken key can be extracted from the lock, which is easier said than done. This extraction typically requires tools, such as needle nose pliers or even bathroom tweezers. While you might own these items, it's likely that they're safely locked inside your home.

A Lockout Service

Since you can't open the lock in its current condition (even if you have a spare key), now is the time to call a locksmith who provides lockout services. Much like having food delivered, time is of the essence when it comes to a lockout service. You shouldn't have to wait for too long, and you'll be given an estimated time of arrival when you order the service.

Assessing the Lock

It will be incredibly simple for a locksmith to extract the broken portion of the key from the lock, although this isn't a guarantee that the lock will immediately be restored to full functionality. The lock itself will be assessed to ensure that it didn't contribute to the breakage.

Key Duplication

If the lock is undamaged and can continue to serve its purpose, all that will be needed is for the locksmith to duplicate a working key to replace the broken key. It should be possible for the broken key to provide the template for its replacement, as long as its blade and notches are intact. This duplication can take place while you wait.

Lock Replacement

Should the lock be compromised to the point of no longer being secure, replacement might be necessary. This can happen onsite, although you should confirm that the chosen lock meets any requirements outlined in your insurance policy, if applicable.

A key broken off in a lock can be rapidly fixed, meaning that the whole affair should be little more than a brief inconvenience. Remember that while a key is extremely durable, it's not immortal.
