Hiring a Locksmith to Help Protect Your Paperwork

Keeping a copy of all your important paperwork safe in one place is a great way to ensure that you have access to things like proofs of purchases, insurance policies, and even wills. But keeping paperwork in a desk drawer or under the bed is not the safest plan – what if a fire breaks out or someone infiltrates your home and steals all the important stuff? Consider hiring a locksmith to install a fireproof floor safe in a closet of your home or in the basement where all of your important paperwork and investments can be kept. You’ll have instant access to it all when you need it, and it will be safe from theft and destruction when you don’t. You might be surprised at how many ways a locksmith can help keep your property at home safe. Explore the pages here for more information!

Your 4 Best Options If Your Car Lock Is Iced Over

by Manuel Carmona

If your find that your car lock is frozen or iced over, here are your three best options for de-icing the lock and getting into your vehicle.

Use A De-Icer

If you live somewhere where the temperatures frequently get down below freezing, purchase a can of de-icer spray from your local auto parts store before the cold weather really sits in. If you have a can of de-icer spray on hand, you can just spray it on your lock and the ice will melt off. Just remember that you should store the de-icer somewhere where you have easy access to it, such as inside of your home or office, and not inside of your vehicle.

Use Hand Sanitizer

If you don't have a de-icer on hand, try using some hand sanitizer instead. Most commercial de-icer's primary ingredient is alcohol, which hand sanitizer has plenty of. Take some hand sanitizer and rub it onto the lock and your car key. The alcohol in the hand sanitizer should melt away the condensation that is on your lock and allow you to get into your car.

Warm Up Your Key

Another option is to warm up your key so that your key is able to break the frozen condensation inside of your car lock. This method works best if you are able to insert your key into the lock but are not able to turn it.

To warm up your key, hold your key over an open flame. The easiest way to do this is to hold your key over a lighter or a match. While you do this, it is best to hold the key with a pair of gloves so that your hand doesn't get burned by the flame or by the heat that is transferred to the key.

Warm Up The Lock

Finally, you can try to warm up the lock. This method works best if the outside of the lock is completely iced over such as after an ice-storm and if you have an electrical outlet near your vehicle.  You can warm up your lock with your hair dryer. Take your hair dryer and hold it a couple of inches away from your lock. Work your hair dryer back and forth across your lock and allow it to slowly melt.

If you find your car lock iced over, try one of the methods above to gain access to your vehicle. If all else fails, call a locksmith like Mattice Lock & Safe.
