2 Ways To Replace Your Coded Car Key

by Manuel Carmona

If you have lost your expensive coded car key, you are going to have problems with getting into your car and starting it. Replacing the key may actually cost you a lot of money, depending on the make and model of your car. Newer cars are going to have keys that are more expensive to replace and may have more features for the car than keys for older cars. If you do lose one, there are different ways that you can get your car key replaced.

Car Dealership

One thing you can do is go to the dealership where you bought your car. They will have the replacement keys and fobs for your car. They will also have the computers necessary to code a key after they have made sure that the key part of the key has been cut to fit your car's locks and ignition. Going to the dealership may get you the key back, but they can also be very expensive. The dealership may be more expensive than other choices open to you.

Locksmith

A locksmith is another option that you can use. There are a lot of benefits to using a locksmith to replace your coded car key. One is that the locksmith can come out to your house or work to replace your key for you. That can be incredibly useful if you can't get your car started. Locksmiths that handle replacing the coded car keys will have machines in a van that will let the cut the key as well as coding it so that you can use it for your car.

Another benefit to using a locksmith is that they don't specialize in just one make of car. They can handle any car brand as well as any model of car that you might have. A locksmith is also generally going to be less expensive than going out to the dealer would be and more convenient, since they will likely have more open hours than a car dealership would have. That means that if you find out that your car key is missing or just not working in the late evening, you can call a locksmith and have them come out to where you are. One issue with the locksmith coming out at certain hours is that they may charge you a small fee to come out on an emergency call.

Having a coded key to your car can make things more convenient. Losing that car key can make things difficult.
