If you have a sliding glass door leading to your backyard area, you most likely enjoy the convenience of being able to get in and out of your home easily while having the benefit of an unobstructed view of the land when gazing out the window. Along with this convenience comes the reality that this door makes it much easier to gain entry into your home -- not only for you, but for thieves as well. Here are some steps you can take to ramp up the effort in keeping a robbery from happening via your sliding glass door.
Reinforce The Existing Lock
The lock that comes pre-installed on a sliding door is not very secure against break-ins. To make the door stronger, the screws holding the switch plate in place can be swapped for longer ones. Aim for installing screws several inches longer than the stock screws that came with the door's locking hardware. These will work better at keeping a thief from kicking the switch plate away from the latch bolt. A locksmith can install a better locking mechanism, giving you the peace of mind that the door will not be able to be picked from the outside. Consider adding a chain lock on the interior of the home for an added precautionary measure as well.
Add A Blockade
When a glass sliding door is shut, the pane on the right side of the pair of panes will be positioned closer to the interior of the room. The space in front of the left pane of glass can be utilized to help keep the right pane from being opened. Simply place a piece of wood horizontally in the door track so it is pushed against the frame of the right pane of glass. The door will not be able to be opened unless the piece of wood is removed first.
Make Some Upgrades
The glass panes of the door can be swapped out for stronger reinforced glass. Shatterproof panes will help keep thieves from breaking them to get inside the home. If your home does not have an alarm system in place, a door alarm can be added to a sliding glass door. These alarms can be purchased from a hardware or home goods store. When the door opens, a shrill sound will be emitted from the alarm, startling a thief as a result. Another addition is placing motion-activated lights outside the sliding door. These will also scare an intruder away before they are able to get inside.
